7 June 2021
Today, June 8, is International Oceans Day, and that is why TIMP wanted to learn a little more about this important date.
In this article you will discover what this day consists of, what it claims and what each person can do to achieve together such a noble purpose.
In addition, taking advantage of the fact that we also provide service to surf schools with our software and app, we will know very closely what the oceans mean for these centers, so closely linked to the marine environment.
And we will also know what they do to contribute to the cause in a celebration that they write down in their agendas every year.
Would you like to join us on this journey through the sea?
Then get on the board and we’ll go for the waves!
International Oceans Day: what is its significance?
It is a reality that human beings, with their excessive industrial activity and international trade, consume more of the planet’s resources than they are able to replenish.
This is having devastating effects on both terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and it is precisely on the latter that the international day in question wishes to draw our attention.
One of the objectives of the United Nationsis to improve the standard of living of human beings, and although it may not seem so at first glance, this quality of life depends to a large extent on environmental protection.
For this reason, in 2008 this organization designated June 8 as International Oceans Day to raise awareness among the world’s population of the importance of preserving the planet’s oceans and seas, as well as the biodiversity they contain.
To this end, it is essential to learn how to use their resources in a sustainable manner.
In order to get an idea of how important this ecosystem is in our daily lives, it is enough to know that the oceans produce at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe.
And yet we have destroyed 50% of the coral reefs and 90% of the Earth’s large fish populations.
This is how we repay them.
“What is it, humans?”
On the UN’s International Oceans Day website you can find more information about this day and find out what you can do to contribute to a better future where our oceans are not threatened.
Because yes: each person can do their part, no matter how small their actions, to try to ensure that future generations will enjoy the oceans and the planet that we have had the privilege of knowing.
International Oceans Day: what activities are being carried out?
On this special and meaningful day, many activities related to the protection of the marine ecosystem are carried out.
Schools, institutions and associations around the world are launching different events with a common goal: to make more and more people aware of the impact that human activity has on the marine biosphere and how they can behave in a respectful way to create a real change for the better.
Coastal cleanup events, photographic exhibitions on marine biological wealth or benefit concerts to support the recovery of the seabed are just some of the proposals that can be found on a day as important as this one.
Without going any further, the United Nations itself has scheduled a virtual event for this day in 2021 that anyone can attend.
It will be attended by opinion leaders, celebrities who support ocean protection, business people involved in maritime trade and scientists with expertise in aquatic biodiversity.
And if you like photography, they have also prepared a photo contest about the beauty of underwater life.
This June 8 they will announce the winners of this year’s contest, and even if you have not been able to participate you might want to sign up for the next edition.
Don’t miss it!
International Oceans Day for Children
Excursions to the beach to clean it of waste, school drawing contests with marine themes, crafts, screening of short films and movies about the care of aquatic beings ….
Any format and excuse is a good way to instill in children the love and respect for the environment in general and for the sea in particular.
Encouraging children to learn the value of caring for the ocean is key to our future on Earth.
Children absorb any knowledge in an incredible way, and that is why it is so important to teach them indisputable values such as respect for nature, since they will accompany them throughout their lives.
Activities like these are a fun way to achieve this, and Oceans Day is the perfect occasion to introduce them to this theme and turn it into a celebration for them.
International Oceans Day: 10 inspirational phrases
Here are some revealing, inspiring and thought-provoking quotes about oceans and seas.
They are worth reading:
“We feel that what we do is only a drop in the sea, but the sea would be less for that one drop lost.”
Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
“Water and land, the two essential fluids on which life depends, have become global cans of garbage.”
Jacques Cousteau.
“The slightest movement is of importance to all of nature.
The whole ocean is affected by one stone.” .
Blaise Pascal.
“The ocean is older than the mountains and laden with the memories and dreams of time.”Howard Phillips Lovecraft.
“That my ship is my treasure, that my God is freedom; my law, strength and the wind; my only homeland, the sea”.
José de Espronceda.
“The sea is the closest we’ve ever been to another world.”
Anne Stevenson.
“Have you never seen the ocean? Well hurry up, you’re running out of time.” From the film Knocking on Heaven’s Door, Thomas Jahn, 1997.
“To me the sea is a continuous miracle: the swimming fish, the rocks, the movement of the waves, the ships and their navigators. Is it that there are stranger miracles?”.
Walt Whitman.
“There is nothing more beautiful than the way the sea refuses to stop kissing the shore, no matter how many times it is sent back.”
Sarah Kay.
“Let us not forget that animals exist for their own reason; they were not made to please humans.”
Alice Walker (of course this quote includes sea creatures).
Surf schools with the oceans
At TIMP we serve several surf schools helping them with our management software to streamline their office tasks, so they can spend more time surfing the waves with their students, which is their main goal.
This made it very easy for us, on a day like this, to know firsthand what the ocean means to them and how they care for it.
Surf schools are training centers especially linked to the sea, so it is not surprising that they highly value its care and preservation as it is their livelihood.
But it is not only for that reason, respect for the oceans is also a philosophy that permeates the daily lives of those who are part of these schools.
As the people in charge of Prado Surf, one of the schools that manages its activity and bookings with TIMP, tell us, “the ocean is the place where we share our passion, a meeting point. The space where we learn every day and develop personally and professionally. The ocean has brought together all of us who make up the Prado Surf family and that is why we love and respect it”.
The sea is to the surfer what the canvas is to the painter.
How surf schools take care of the ocean
In their commitment to the marine ecosystem, many surf schools organize different activities every year to raise awareness among their students and anyone who happens to be on the beach that day.
Some of the events they carry out are public talks with surfing and environmental experts or days in which surfing and other outdoor sports competitions are combined with collective waste removal on the shore.
Each surf academy does its part to ensure that this environmental message reaches as many people as possible.
In fact, you only need to go through the blogs of many schools and their social networks to see that they also publish content on this special day, helping to raise awareness about the need to protect the sea and the life it harbors.
We are all part of the problem… and part of the solution.
In short, both surf schools, because of their link to the beach, and the rest of us, because of our relationship with the planet , must take responsibility for the position we occupy in the environment.
We are the only species that breaks the delicate natural balance on which the rest of living beings and ourselves depend, and at this point we do it consciously.
Therefore, it is vital that we become aware of what we can do to protect the ocean, which gives us so much without us often noticing it.
Every small daily action counts: not emptying the toilet cistern completely except when it is essential, turning off the faucet while soaping our hands or body (the same when washing dishes), taking a shower instead of a bath, cutting the plastic rings on the plastic rings of the toilet bowl. except when it is essential, turn off the tap while soaping our hands or body (the same when washing the dishes), take a shower instead of a bath, cut the plastic rings off the can packs before throwing them away (placing them in the plastic container), do not throw wipes in the toilet or objects or products that are toxic to the aquatic environment (generally those that are toxic are indicated on the packaging)…
It is in our hands.
For a healthy and clean planet, let’s take care of our oceans!
