After decades of success in the United States, barre is starting to make waves in Spain, where it has been practiced for years with a gradual but steady growth.
And to find out how a barre center is managed with TIMP, we asked an expert: Silvia Palomo, from Be Barre Barcelona.
In this article she explains how she understands this discipline and reveals the role that TIMP plays in her day to day at the head of her academy.
She has told us some very, very interesting tidbits.
Do you want to discover them?
Well, let’s get to it, but first let’s take a brief look at what barre is, to put the whole interview in context.
If you know more than enough about it, you can go straight to the heart of the matter.
You’ll love our chat with Silvia!
What does the barre consist of?
Barre is a discipline that combines classic ballet movements with postures typical of pilates or yoga.
In addition, a barre session also includes a strong component of cardiovascular exercise, as it is still a dance-related workout.
It often includes elements such as dumbbells or mat body work, but it is common to perform a large number of exercises while holding on to a barbell.
The bar: the key element of the barre that gives it its name
Its name gives us the clue.
If we also know that it has its origins in ballet, the thing is more than obvious: the barre is mostly performed with the help of the classic ballet barre placed horizontally next to a mirror.
Barre practitioners hold on to it and perform the different postures and exercises of ballet, yoga and pilates while training their balance and strengthening their muscles.
Who can practice sweeping?
The barre is characterized for being a low-impact exercise on the joints, so it is suitable for anyone -no matter the age- who wants to tone their body and improve their body posture.
It is usually practiced by more women than men, but what many people do not know is that the barre has been part of the training of many male soccer players for years, precisely because of its ability to strengthen the legs.
And it is becoming increasingly common to find men attending barre classes at barre academies.
Despite what it may seem, barre is very physically demanding.
A management software and booking application for barre schools?
It is common to ask whether a relatively new discipline such as barre can benefit from a management and booking system.
And the answer is yes, of course.
As with any academy, TIMP adapts perfectly to the operation of a center dedicated to barre, streamlining its usual management and automating the reservations of students and students who come daily.
We then chatted with Silvia Palomo to confirm the positive change that her barre center has undergone thanks to TIMP.
Interview with Silvia Palomo, from Be Barre Barcelona: “My turnover has grown since I started using TIMP”.
Be Barre’s manager tells us about her experience teaching this exciting discipline and how TIMP helps her with the management of her academy:
Silvia, tell us what barre is for you.
What does it bring to you on a personal and professional level?
For me barre is a concept and an experience.
It is not just physical exercise or a simple method.
It has become my philosophy of life.
Barre is your moment of disconnection and self-care at all levels. Mens sana in corpore sano, plus empowerment, laughter and community.
Where did you learn it?
Is it the same technique that you apply in your school or have you innovated by bringing your own point of view?
I started with classical dance when I was four years old.
But I learned and trained in barre in Germany four years ago, along with BASI pilates and hypopressive.
The method is what it is.
Although it is true that it has evolved over the years and I have evolved with it.
I learned a class and teaching structure that is not the one I apply today.
As I mentioned before, for me it’s an experience, so as such I interact a lot with each of the girls who come to the studio and I encourage them to interact with each other as well.
Different types of classes have been born according to this evolution and the demand in Barcelona, the target of girls who come and the physical shape they are in.
I started with only one type of class and students of an average age between 35 and 45 years old, and nowadays it is much wider and many young girls between 22 and 35 come.
So yes, my way of teaching, transmitting and reaching each and every girl is very personal.
My mantra: “HAVE FUN!!!” above all things.
What are the benefits of barre for those who practice it?
Do you think its success is temporary or will it continue to grow?
Barre is beneficial on all levels: it sculpts, tones and corrects.
Isometric exercises force you to repeat and fatigue the muscle, and this strengthens and sculpts (literally).
The barre corrects your posture.
Ballet movements and postures force you to be aware of your center, your axis, your weight and to know how to control each point of it.
Pilates makes you aware of the pelvic floor, so important for women at any age and condition, not only for moms.
The cardio and the intensity of the method activates your heart and makes the brain release dopamine, endorphins and serotonin, the famous happiness hormones.
That’s why it’s addictive (laughs).
And the more you train, the more dopamine is generated, getting that feeling of satisfaction and well-being.
In addition, the barre requires concentration and memory to perform the combos.
I could make you a huge list of the benefits I find and the benefits that we at Be Barre have added to each class.
That’s what makes the experience so special.
As for its success, the barre is not temporary.
It is here to stay, just as it did in England and the USA.
It has been there for more than 10 years and continues to evolve and to be one of the star trainings.
Years ago it was the training of actors, actresses and dancers.
Today it is also the training of many models: the Victoria’s Secret models started with it.
So I predict more or less the same here.
It happened with pilates and yoga back in the day, and I imagine we’ll see the same progression with barre.
What is your goal with the school, besides teaching this discipline to your students?
My goal is very simple: FUN, HAPPINESS, COMMUNITY and EMPOWERMENT.
The rest comes on its own and is part of the process. May you come out better than you went in, whether physically, mentally or emotionally.
Dedicate an hour for yourself, and I will try to make you forget absolutely everything.
Do you have a lot of class bookings each week?
How did you manage them before using TIMP at school?
Well, honestly, as of today, the classes are usually full and there is a waiting list practically every day .
Before TIMP?
Well, as I could (laughs).
A bit of a mess and manually, with paper, pen and making lists, I’m not going to deceive you…
How has your business management changed since you have TIMP?
What improvements or advantages have you noticed?
It has changed 100%. You have brought me professionalism and comfort, sincerely. And quality in terms of time.
What I used to do manually, your app does now and I have more time to manage other parts of the business and dedicate more time to the girls and the classes.
Do your students use the app to book their classes from their mobile?
What do they like most about the app?
Yes, today everything goes through your app.
Including payments.
And through mobile.
What they like most is the autonomy it gives them to be able to take the rate that suits them best at any time and the independence to book and manage their reservations at their own free will.
It is also very simple and intuitive and that facilitates the whole process and is very grateful. It can be used by anyone.
What are the functionalities of the panel that you use the most?
What do you like most about using TIMP?
Well, I use the main thing, which is the management of schedules, students, payments, new customers…
And internally the statistics that you offer.
Since I’m a bit of a slob when it comes to this kind of thing, I’m grateful that you give me everything so chewed out.
I keep an overall control of the entire business through these statistics.
A godsend for someone as disorganized as I am when it comes to management.
In terms of turnover, has it increased since you have been using the software?
Absolutely!
Timp and Be Barre could say they are growing together.
I found you very early on in my life and you have made the organic growth of the studio and its girls flow perfectly.
Can you imagine if I still had a paper list?
OMG, noooo!
The other option would have been Excel.
And he and I have never been close friends.
As you know, at TIMP we work with different types of businesses.
But from your experience, how does TIMP help a barre center specifically?
As simple as it helps you grow and manage. It brings quality and practicality.
In the age of noise and speed, people are looking for comfort, autonomy and confidentiality.
By being able to do everything through the app without having to consult with anyone else, it gives them power and security.
And for me, peace of mind.
So everybody’s happy!
In short…
Silvia has left no doubt: TIMP is the perfect solution for the management of a barre school and the class booking of its students.
So, if you also have a barre academy and you still manage everything with paper or Excel… what are you waiting for to do yourself a favor?
Book a no-obligation demonstration and we will show you how to use TIMP in your center, so you can increase your turnover and gain more time for yourself and your classes, just like Silvia has done at Be Barre.
We are waiting for you!
